C60 QStar

Multiple-Quadrupole Orthogonal Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometer Equipped with C60 Primary Ion Source

This is an in-house alteration of a tandem mass spectrometer (MS/MS) with the QTOF configuration, and has been developed in our laboratory with the goal to carry out Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry MS/MS methodology to identify specific mass fragments for use in SIMS imaging. A commercially available high-performance matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) and electrospray ionization instrument (QStar, AB Sciex) with hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer has been modified and combined with a 20 kV C60 ion source (Ionoptika Ltd UK). This modification provides several advantages such as increased mass resolution, mass accuracy and MS/MS ability that improves the SIMS technique for analyzing complex biological samples such as cells and tissues.
