The goal of my research is to better understand neurodegenerative diseases affecting myelinisation such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), an important group of neurological disorders causing serious, chronic, and often irreversible damage to the central nervous system. The massive complexity of the nervous system and also the lack of known pathogenic mechanisms and cellular processes underlying neurodegenerative disorders indicate that studies thereof preferably should be carried out with non-biased, label free, ‘omics’ approaches.
My research is therefore focused on the development and application of two promising label-free imaging techniques, Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI) and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) to image, map and detect neuropeptides and lipids in the brain. This is of interest for investigating the underlying chemical mechanisms and changes in biomolecules during the progression of neurological disorders. Furthermore, analytical tools based on proteomics and lipidomics are being developed to facilitate investigations with high chemical sensitivity, specificity and spatial resolution to carry out the studies at the subcellular level.
